Here’s a soldering tip from
@alexmalexdesigns for heating a piece from below: Cut a small piece of steel mesh and place it on the end of your charcoal block. She uses a heavy coin to weigh down the mesh — this is key, as the last thing you want is your piece flipping off because the mesh shifts. You could also use two blocks to support and hold the mesh in place. Simple and incredibly durable — her two pieces of mesh have lasted 8 years and counting! A technique she learned from an experienced jeweler who made many of his own tools. 🙏 If you want to try this, look for heavy steel wire gauze — some jewelry supply companies sell it in 5-inch squares, and you can also find suppliers online.
