Here is a tip for soldering gold bezels to silver from @susanfauman - “Soldering a gold bezel to silver: Start by closing the bezel with medium or hard gold solder. Check to see the bezel fits the stone well. Sand the bottom edge to ensure good contact between the bezel and silver backplate. Sand the silver surface as well. Flux both pieces--gold soldering uses borax with the flux. I love Cuprinil, which is a combo of flux and borax and comes in a spray bottle. Set up the silver backing with some space beneath so you can heat from underneath. Gently start heating the silver until the flux bubbles and clears. Using tweezers, place the gold bezel. Add small chips or balls of medium solder to the lower inner edge of the bezel. Keep heating, watching for overheating the gold. This is the stage where I've melted lots of gold bezels. Just take it slow and keep evenly heating primarily the silver. Watch to see when the solder begins to follow, making sure it travels all the way around the base of the bezel.” Tons of members of the community were asking for some pointers on this, so I hope everyone finds this helpful and huge thanks to Susan for taking the time to document her process for us! #metalsmithsociety #makingbezels #bezelmaking #howtomakejewelry #jewelrycommunity
