Here is a way that I’ve found over the years to be relatively pain free and easy for beginner smiths too. Something else to pay attention to for any solder join is that solder is much less malleable than the metal surrounding it, and it doesn’t like to be manipulated. Try to always put your solder join in a place that requires the least amount of compression - on the long side of an oval, or on the corners and/or points. You’re less likely to have a split or a catastrophic seam failure during setting. This is actually a tip I learned this semester in my gemstone setting class!” Love this step by step!
