Love this post from jeweler @ksjewellerydesigns which has some great stone setting tips - “I have started to set the labradorite cabochon in my latest Sea Life Pendant and thought I would share some of my 'trusty' bezel setting tools!
Firstly, I could not be without my little rubber block. I use it constantly in my jewellery making to rest against when I'm filing, shaping and sanding, etc. It gives me something to push against and raises the jewellery piece up a level from my desk.
For setting stones, especially awkward settings like this one, I tape the jewellery piece onto the top of the rubber block. This not only holds the piece in place but also protects the rest of the piece from getting marked if I slip when setting the stone.
To set this cabochon, I have decided to start with something soft to help push the metal over the stone. I am fearful of scratching or denting the bezel setting if I go straight in with the metal tools, so this half of a clothes peg is perfect.
Next I will use my pusher (the tool with the square end). This helps push the metal closer to the stone. Then finally, I will use my burnisher to rub over the edges of the metal where it meets the cabochon. This burnisher came with a silver clay beginner's kit I bought many years ago and my husband has added a wooden handle in the middle to help me grip it better.” That rubber block is sweet! Would love to know where you go that!
