#tooltalktuesday I wanted to (finally) chat about magnetic tumblers 😄🔥 I often get asked about them and I thought it would be a great topic to discuss! There are many options on the market, but I wanted to show the Arbe KMT-15V Variable Speed 100mm Super Mini Magnetic Tumbler-110V (# 147.585) from
@ottofrei1930 I wanted to showcase this particular mini tumbler because it’s one of the most affordable ($325) and has variable speed! For those unfamiliar with the premise of magnetic tumblers they are different from rotary tumblers (and more expensive) they utilize tiny, stainless steel magnetic pins that rotate quickly with water and a small amount of polishing soap. These tiny pins work quickly to burnish the surface of your metal and they can reach into the smallest crevices. I like that the magnetic tumblers work quickly (as little as ten minutes) to create a uniform shiny surface. I would not say they are capable of work hardening so you can throw pieces in prior to setting a stone to get into all the tight spots and your bezel will still be soft enough to push over! I would also say magnetic tumblers are WAY quicker to take your pieces in and out of. The reason you will want to consider a variable speed tumbler is because you don’t want pieces to be hitting each other inside the tumbler! Another frequently asked question is whether you can put stones in it, I would offer they same advice I give with rotary tumblers, unless its a diamond you may want to be careful. Softer stones can be damaged so always err on the side of caution!
