Swipe 👉 to see a tip for filing an open ring from @wendyjonewmetaldesigns - “Besides all the standard uses of a miter jig, I love using mine for preparing a ring band to be soldered to the setting for an open top ring. I cut some sodalite and jade and decided the stones used together would make a great open top ring. In order to ensure perfectly flat surface areas on both sides of the ring band to sit on perfectly flat setting backs for optimal attachment, I first tighten my miter jig to hold the band with the excess metal sticking out. After ensuring that the band is adjusted properly in the jig, I file off the excess metal until the surfaces are flush with the miter jig sides. I then conduct my standard tests—the eyeball test and the standing upside down test—to confirm my band is ready for soldering to the settings. On the charcoal brick, I place settings upside down and set up the band for soldering making sure that the surfaces to be soldered fully touching. You’ll notice in my photo that I have a flat piece of copper under one of my settings. *Bonus tip—I did this to level the backs since one of the bezels is shorter than the other. Once satisfied that all is set up properly for soldering, I solder the ring parts together, do all the finishing work, and set the stones. Works every time!!” Fantastic Wendy! This is a great technique and for anyone on the fence about buying a miter jig, go ahead and do it! So many uses. #FilingTip #Filing #MiterJig #JewelryMakingTips #SolderinASilverRing
