Here is a tutorial for doming a ring from @tracey_michelle129 - “
Here is how you fabricate your own domed ring band with minimal tools, you will need: 1. fabricated ring blank 2. ring mandrel 3. doming block 4. steel bench block mallet.
1. Fabricate your band and pre polish. approx twice the size needed (I started with a ring size 14 and stopped at size 8). The material I used is 18g and the width is 13mm.
2. Select the dome slightly smaller than your ring and place your ring in the dome down flat and put your bench block on top, level. I hold mine in place and give it a couple of whacks with your mallet. Flip it over and give the other side the same treatment.
3. Check both ends on your ring mandrel to ensure both openings are reducing to the same size.
4. Continue the process of moving to the next smaller size on your doming block, hammering both ends and checking the ring size until the desired size is met. (Anneal your ring as necessary)
6. Final polish That’s it!” Thank you so much for sharing this with us! To continue to celebrate our community’s diversity and also #amplifymelanatedvoices tedvoices I asked Tracey to share a bit of her story and what inspires her as a Black jeweler: “I started my jewelry journey beading and wire wrapping like a lot of “self taught” metalsmiths. In 2013, I picked up a torch and that was it! I am passionate about process and driven by the challenge of mastering a technique.
This piece, “Manacle of Justice” is my fav so far. It required me to step waaaaaayyyyy out of my comfort zone by applying to a juried show and learning the techniques applied. Not to mention, it was soul baring. ❤️” #jewelrymakingtutorial #domedring #dappingblock
