For this week’s #tooltalktuesday I wanted to talk about Bezel Setting Punches. I bought this economy set for myself years ago after having worked for a jeweler that used them in their studio. The idea is you use this tool to set tube settings with a few hammer strikes. The shape of the tool is concave and it pushes down the edge of the entire setting, all at once. I had found it took a little bit of practice because if your stone goes crooked right before you strike or you hit too hard it can get wonky but ones you get the technique down it can save huge amounts of time! Especially if you have a production piece where you set the same size tube setting over and over again! In this quick demo I made an earring and placed it in my little riveting block (also a cool tool) so the piece had a nice sturdy surface for me to use the tool on. First I start with a few lighter taps then I’ll go a little stronger (I used a raw hide mallet) and then I rotate it a bit. It works well! These tools can be found at most jewelry supply companies! I also got a beautiful individual punch in my last @benchtooljunkies box from @flowstudiosupply that is awesome, their set is definitely on my wishlist! Anyone else use these? Tell us all about it! Also this month’s #metalsmithchallenge is TUBE SETTINGS. So I figured this would be fun to talk about!
