#sponsored For this week’s #tooltalktuesday I am showing off the Foredom® Hammer Handpiece #15 (item 850-1270) from our friends at @gesswein.jewelry If you are new to the idea of a hammer handpiece let me break it down for you, this is an attachment you use with your Foredom flex shaft. First you remove the standard rotary handpiece and then you replace it with this tool which creates a hammering motion. The most important thing to know about this hammer handpiece: it should only be operated at speeds of 0–5,000 RPM 🚨 Using it at higher speeds will create excessive heat which will damage the handpiece, ask me how I know 🤦♀️ To give you an idea a Foredom SR flex shaft runs as fast as 18,000 RPM. So if you go full blast on your hammer handpiece you will destroy it. What I have found this handpiece most helpful for is pushing down thick bezels and harder metals. Once I have my work either secured in thermoplastic or a vise or resting on top of a hard surface like a steel plate I can use this handpiece to push down my bezel. It comes with one anvil point. I like to polish mine up when it’s brand-new to remove any sharp edges that could mar my metal. There is also an additional set of anvils you can get and I highly recommend them (Item 850-3780.) You can also modify them to meet your needs. In researching this post I learned you can adjust the impact of the stroke! You turn the knurled ring on the handpiece– counterclockwise towards the tip for a lighter impact– and clockwise towards the back of the handpiece for a heavier impact. Last thing I’ll mention you do need to be careful to not hit your stone!Covering your stone with painter’s tape before setting is always a good practice to avoid a scratch but if you hammer down on a stone you can image what will happen. I would love to see how others use their hammer handpieces! I’ve heard of people applying textures with them! Send me pics or video and we can share! Thanks Gesswein for making this post possible! You can find this handpiece and the additional anvils and basically every tool you could ever dream of on their website!
