Here is a #diy copper bezel pusher from @mikeca1216 - “I like a short handle also because I have small hands as well, but I found that having a short handle is just half the issue with slipping while pushing a bezel. The other half is the steel pusher itself; I found myself slipping all too often and leaving a tool mark that I had to smooth out after getting the stone set.I replaced it with a metal that has a little more “tooth” and significantly reduces slipping while pushing or rolling the bezel and therefore reduces leaving a mark. In my case I built the rocker part out of copper. I have tried brass - which works pretty well also because it has a bit of “tooth” as well - but after experimenting a bit, I settled on copper.
I noticed years ago how much “stickier” copper feels while sawing, filing, etc., so I thought I’d give it a whirl. I made the rocker a little thicker than the steel one I was replacing to add some strength, and I pinched the flat sides several times with vise grip pliers to add some knurling for my thumb and pointer finger to get some extra grip. My solution for the long handle was to install the rocker in an extra mushroom handle I had on my bench. As I have used it, the front of the rocker has work hardened which is fine by me because it just makes the rocker that much stronger. When the pushing surface gets a little dented up as it will after a while, I take a few stokes with my sand sticks - 220 then 800 to give it a nice bright satin finish - and I’m back in business for several days.” Thank you so much for sharing this with me Michael (he sent his email in 2019!) this is a great idea to modify length and material until you find a pusher that works great for you! #jeweler #settingtools #settingbezels
