Our friends @turquoise_moose carry a wide variety of calibrated turquoise but some of you may be asking “what does that mean Corkie?!?” Calibrated turquoise is turquoise that is cut to fit standard size commercial gemstone jewelry mountings and settings, just like many gemstones that adhere to standard jewelry setting measurements, such as these 5mm x 7mm teardrop cabochons. So my tip for those of us that are producing multiples of the same piece or want to be able to add bezels that are consistent to your designs: create your own bezel prototype and have a mold made! The trick here is when a mold is made and injected with wax to create multiples there is some shrinkage that occurs so you want to create your setting so the stone loosely comes in and out. I also like to use 1mm thick wire, this prevents the castings from being too thin and gives you enough material to file a chamfered edge and polish them up nicely! If you are looking for a caster I have a blog article over at metalsmithsociety.com where I listed a bunch you can contact. If you are looking for gorgeous calibrated stones head over to Turquoise Moose. Link in my profile for the calibrated stones :) They are also offering our community 15% off with code MSSOCT (that is an O as in October 🎃now through 10/13.
