When I’m soldering a clasp onto a chain I use Ronda Coryell’s Masking Mud to protect the fine chain and clasp itself. I position the jump ring in a third hand with the seam facing the ceiling and position my torch flame upward to avoid melting anything. The mud is available from our friends at
