Here is a tip for oxidizing gold from @leahhollrockjewelry - “I use iodine to oxidize my gold jewelry. (I used to use black max applied with steel wool, but I found the color wasn’t great and the finish wasn’t long lasting.) 1.) First you have to get really concentrated iodine - not the antiseptic 10% stuff you’ll find at a drug store. I’ve found concentrated dietary iodine to work well.
2.) Second, submerge your gold piece into the iodine. I put mine in a glass jar on top of a hot plate. I found heating it up quickens the process. The longer you leave the gold in the iodine the darker it gets. - The beauty of using iodine is you get a nice dark brown oxidization that I think really compliments the gold!
3.) Take the pieces out and rinse with water. If you wait a little bit before rinsing, the pieces will get really dark brown.
4.) Last step is to polish the pieces so the gold color is revealed on the surface details and the dark brown remains in the recesses.” 🤯 Didn’t know this was a thing! Thank you so much for sharing, I have learned SO much since starting this community and I love it ☺️ #metalsmithsociety #oxidizinggold #howtomakejewelry #jewelrytipoftheday
