For this week’s #tooltalktuesday I wanted to show a tool that I’ve been using FOREVER, my Matt Wax Ring Sizer. If you work in wax this mandrel is a huge time saver, it simply helps you achieve the ring size you want by slowly cutting away wax from the inside of your ring. What I like to do is use it to get within a half size of my goal and then I switch to my split mandrel or sandpaper rolls and use my flex shaft to smooth the inside of the ring and carefully get to the size I want. The blade on this mandrel leaves marks in the wax that are easy to remove in wax but take more time once your ring has been cast. So by using sandpaper I can quickly sand them off. You can purchase these from our friends at @ottofrei1930 and save 5% by using code MMS719X also while price comparing and researching for this post I discovered that there are knock-off versions of these on Amazon, definitely a huge issue in the jewelery tool world that I will try to address more in 2020. The problem with the knock off (besides the fact that it’s stealing from the company Matt) is safety! The real mandrels are made from hardwood and machined to incorporate a steel cutting blade that is nice and secure. I read reviews of knock offs where the blades fell off 😵 yikes. These retail for $25 and I’ve had mine for over a decade. Hope this is helpful to those getting into wax working! #metalsmithsociety #jewelrytools #waxworkingtools #mswaxworkingtip
