#tooltalktuesday I’m stoked to discuss the Luxor® by Merard Polishing Kit from
@riogrande - it includes four silica free, easy to clean off, polishing compounds and two cotton buffs. I recently invested in a Foredom Bench Lathe after many, many years of using my flexshaft to polish my work and the lathe with these polishing compounds have been A GAME CHANGER (there is also a flexshaft option) The pink Luxor® (6.5 micron) is incredible at removing scratches and firescale. The firescale in the first image was removed in under a minute on the bench lathe. The white Luxor® (0.3 micron) is less aggressive but another pre-polish step. You wouldn’t want to jump from pink to a final polish so the white is a step between. The yellow Luxor® is specially formulated to bring a mirror finish onto yellow metals (gold/brass/copper) and the orange Luxor® is formulated for white metals (stainless steel/titanium/platinum/white gold/silver). Merard specially designed their compounds to correspond with specific buffs to give you the quickest, most efficient polish (I've included their chart for a quick reference) You do not want to cross contaminate buffs between metals, so label your buffs and designate each for a certain metal! This prevents micro scratches and metal transfer (since some metals are harder than others). The plastic sleeve on these compounds keeps your hands clean and prevents crumbling but avoid getting the plastic on your buff. Store compounds in an airtight container to avoid them drying out over time. If you are using a flexshaft you can purchase the compounds individually with a Balloon Cloth Buffing Wheel (#330711) on a screw mandrel (#333105) They work amazingly and for things that are harder to hold onto, or small areas you need to polish I recommend these regardless of whether you have a polishing machine or not! ALWAYS wear eye protection and a mask. Keep loose clothing and hair away from the polishing machine!
