Yesterday we discussed removal of tarnish from silver pieces and today we are focusing on prevention + a GIVEAWAY (CLOSED WINNER TBA) from @kernowcraft the best way to handle tarnish is to try to prevent it in the first place. Over time sterling silver exposed to air will tarnish. It is comprised of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals. It’s the other metals, typically copper, that make sterling silver tarnish. One product we previously discussed on this page is Renaissance Wax, as you can see in the video you take a small amount and buff it onto a finished piece (I used a clean cotton glove). This moisture resistant wax helps prevent tarnish and corrosion, it’s also a barrier against fingerprints making it an ideal option for jewelry that is on display! The other item is 3M Anti-Tarnish Strips (which I cut into smaller squares and place in ziplock bags.) The strips are special absorbent paper that protects metal jewelry and other items from discoloration and tarnish, especially during shipping or while in storage. They protect silver, nickel, copper, bronze, brass, tin and gold. Whenever I finish a piece I immediately place it in an airtight bag with one of these squares! To get an additional entry to the @kernowcraft £30 GIVEAWAY, you can tag another friend and tell us what you currently do to combat tarnish! We’d love to hear! Kernow is also giving our community a free gift with purchase, To claim the free gift: Add the renaissance wax and anti paper tarnish strips to your basket, then enter the code: METALSMITH to get the papers for free (now through - March 7th (midnight GMT). #sponsored #metalsmithsociety #antitarnish #tarnishprevention #kernowcraft
