For this week’s #tooltalktuesday I wanted to talk about a tool I constantly use but have never done an official tool talk for: my Foredom Bench Lathe I got mine from our friends at @ottofrei1930 a few years ago. For a long time I only used my flex shaft to polish my work, but then I finally took the next step and bought this bench lathe. It is an affordable, powerful, compact bench lathe. I mounted mine to the top of a workbench! For someone looking to step up their polishing game it is a great next step. This lathe comes with left hand and right hand tapered spindles for holding buffs and brushes up to 4" in diameter. It has variable speed which is nice as some wheels do better at a slower RPM. It is important to state that you also need a hood of some sort or dust and debris will go everywhere! I invested in two Foredom MAFH25 Power Filter Hood Dust Collectors. These collect dust and debris in filters which you can replace (and send the one one to the refiner for $$$) You do also have the option to get regular hoods and connect those to dust collectors. I think that is potentially a better option but more of an investment upfront. I encourage anyone interested in this unit to head over to tips.metalsmithsociety.com and search “Foredom Bench Lathe” and you will see tons of posts I’ve done using this thing, sanding kits, getting a mirror finish polish with Luxi or Luxor, satin wheels… these are available from tons of retailers, I do always like to mention that our friends at Otto Frei give our community 5% off and each purchase supports the page with code MSSOF ☺️ just sayin. #foredombenchlathe #polishingmachine #polishingjewelry
