Here is a great plier modification from @jonesingforjewelry - “I’ve been really struggling to lately with my grip and particularly holding small bezels while filing and sanding. Unfortunately all the conventional holding tools crush the bezels. I had some of these Dimple pliers from a Rio set I bought years ago and never use so I decided to modify them. (Looks like you can buy just one pair from several online sites rather than investing in the set)
Step 1. Using a cutoff wheel, I cut off approximately 2-4mm of the curved tip. A shorter, wider tip helped give room for non-marring material and ensured that the pliers wouldn’t simple my backplate as they were originally intended to do.
Step 2. I added 2 layers of leather using superglue to the flat portion of my pliers to help ensure they didn’t mar my backplate
Step 3. Using Jet Set I molded some different shaped caps for the curved tip. This gives more grip to the pliers and again helps not to mar or deform the backplate. The jet set tips just slide on and off so you can change them out depending on the site of your bezel. “ 😎 Thank you SO much for sharing with us! This would be a great way to hold when Sanding and polishing the solder seam on a bezel! So useful! #metalsmithsociety #metalsmith #ladysmith #modifiedpliers #diyjewelrytools #modifiedjewelrytools
