Here is a tip for supporting larger ring shanks (and splitshanks) while setting from @lionandlambstudios -
“I use my bench pin when I set a stone in a split shank ring. I set a piece of leather across the pin, then put the ring in the cut out part. I guess it helps that I make big ass rings, but you could probably modify a cheap pin to have a thinner slice taken out if you wanted to.” I love the idea of leather because it protects your piece from getting scratched 🙌 As jewelers we can never have too many ways to think about supporting a piece while setting a stone.
