Here is a method for quickly removing lots of small diamonds from a piece you are reworking from @fairbankandperry - “The most efficient (and fun) way to remove lots of small diamonds from a gold ring is to melt it! 1️⃣ Coat the whole piece in saving solution: Boric Acid (not the same thing as Borax) and Denatured Alcohol, maybe 50:50? 2️⃣ Burn off the alcohol. Don’t linger - once the piece is melted, turn off the flame. 3️⃣ Wait until the metal is completely cooled before putting it in the pickle. 4️⃣ This can only be done with gold or silver. (Platinum and Palladium melt at too high a temp.)5️⃣ Most importantly, USE CAUTION‼️ Don’t do this with any diamonds you can’t replace. We only do this with melee and in cases where it would really save time. We always tell the client and ask their permission to remove stones in this manner.” Thank you so much for sharing this, I’ve definitely used this method to remove a small flush set diamond from a piece I wanted to melt down. We’ve talked in the past about how you can solder a piece with a small diamond in it and the same steps apply, but always air on the side of caution! #metalsmithsociety #jewelrymakingtipoftheday
